INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR KID PIX DELUXE 3:
It is recommended that an adult do the initial software installation and hardware setup of Kid Pix Deluxe 3. Exit all other programs, applications and screensavers before installing Kid Pix Deluxe 3. When installing Kid Pix Deluxe 3 you'll be given a choice of proceeding with a minimal install or a full install.
* Choosing the minimal install option will require you to run the program from the CD-ROM, but will take up less space on your hard drive.
* Choosing the full install option will take up more space on your hard drive -- about 370 MB -- but will allow you to run the program without the CD-ROM. If you have adequate hard drive space, we recommend the full install option to maximize the speed and performance of the program.
1. To Install:
* Begin at the Windows desktop.
* Insert the Kid Pix Deluxe 3 CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. The Kid Pix Deluxe 3 startup window will appear.
* Click the install button and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
If the Kid Pix Deluxe 3 startup window does not appear automatically, follow these steps to install the program manually:
* Click the start button on the taskbar and choose Run.
* Type D:SETUP.EXE in the line labeled Open. If your CD-ROM drive uses a letter other than D, substitute that letter for D.
* Click OK and follow the on-screen instructions.
2. To Start:
After successfully installing the program, click the "Start Kid Pix" button at the startup window to start the program.
The startup window will usually appear each time the CD-ROM is inserted
into the CD-ROM drive.
If the Kid Pix Deluxe 3 startup window does not appear automatically on screen:
* Begin at the Windows desktop.
* Click the Start button, point to Programs, and then to Kid Pix Deluxe 3.
* Click the Kid Pix Deluxe 3 menu item to start the program.
3. To Uninstall:
If you need to remove Kid Pix Deluxe 3 from your system, follow these instructions.
* Insert the Kid Pix Deluxe 3 CD-ROM.
* The Kid Pix Deluxe 3 Start Up page window will appear.
* Click on the Install/Uninstall button and follow the on-screen
instructions.

KID PIX DELUXE 3 TIPS
1. QuickTime Movies:
Kid Pix Deluxe 3 comes with 12 QuickTime movies. These movies can be added to your page. To add QuickTime movies to your page, follow these instructions:
* Start Kid Pix Deluxe 3.
* Click on the Add Menu.
* Click on "Add Movie."
* Navigate to the Kid Pix Deluxe 3 CD-ROM.
* Click on the "QT Movies" folder.
* Select a movie by clicking on it.
* Click the "Open" button.
* The movie will appear on your page
Note: If you've chosen the full install option, you will still need the Kid Pix Deluxe CD-ROM to use the QuickTime movies. They remain on the disk and are not automatically copied to your hard drive. If you want to copy them to your hard drive, you may do so. They will take up 25 MB of space on your hard drive.
2. How to use the Kid Pix Deluxe 3 Menu Bar:
The Kid Pix Menu Bar is not visible during normal operations. To access the Menu Bar, follow these instructions:
* Move your cursor to the top of the screen.
* When you cursor gets to the top of the screen it will turn into a down arrow.
* Click when you see the down arrow.
* The Menu Bar will appear.
3. Accessing the User Guide:
The Kid Pix Deluxe 3 User Guide is accessible via the Menu Bar. To open the User Guide follow these instructions:
* Start Kid Pix Deluxe 3.
* From the Help Menu, Choose View User Guide.
* Read or print the parts of the User Guide you need.
4. Compatibility with Kid Pix Studio Deluxe
Kid Pix Deluxe 3 is not an upgrade of Kid Pix Studio Deluxe. Generally, these two programs are not compatible. For example, a SlideShow created in Kid Pix Studio Deluxe will not be able to play as a SlideShow in Kid Pix Deluxe 3. However, you may be able to use some of your Kid Pix Studio Deluxe creations in Kid Pix Deluxe 3 in the following ways:
* You can save a picture created in Kid Pix Studio Deluxe as a .bmp file and then import it into Kid Pix Deluxe 3.
* You can re-create a favorite Kid Pix Studio Deluxe SlideShow by importing the individual pictures (as .bmp files) into Kid Pix Deluxe 3. Then use these images to create a new SlideShow in Kid Pix Deluxe 3.
* If you're using Kid Pix Studio Deluxe on a Macintosh Computer, you can save a SlideShow as a QuickTime movie and then import it to a page in Kid Pix Deluxe 3. The QuickTime movie will play within the Kid Pix Deluxe 3 page.
Note: If you're using Kid Pix Studio Deluxe on a Windows-compatible computer you will not be able to save your SlideShow as a QuickTime movie. The Windows version of Kid Pix Studio Deluxe can only save SlideShows as AVI files. AVI files will not play in Kid Pix Deluxe 3.

KNOWN PROBLEMS AND LIMITATIONS
1. Network
Kid Pix Deluxe 3 is not intended to be run on a network.
2. Problems with Multiple Users:
Only one instance of Kid Pix Deluxe 3 can run on a single computer. This means that you cannot have two users logged on at the same time on the same computer. If a second user would like to log on, please follow these instructions:
* Quit Kid Pix Deluxe 3 and log on as a new user, or;
* Select "Log On As A New User" -- via the File menu -- to log on as a new user.
3. Screen Resizing:
Kid Pix Deluxe 3 automatically switches your screen size to 800 x 600 when you start the application. When you exit Kid Pix, the screen size is switched back to its original setting. However, some system configurations may have difficulty switching back to the original settings. If this happens, do the following to adjust your screen size:
* Click the Windows Start button.
* Point to Settings, then point to and click on Control Panel.
* Click on the "Display" icon.
* Click on the "Settings" tab.
* Use the slider to adjust your screen size.
* Click the "Apply" button.
Note: Installing the most recent drivers for your video card may alleviate this problem.
3. Using Kid Pix Email:
An internet browser of 4.0 or higher is needed to utilize email and to take full advantage of the features found on the Kid Pix website (www.kidpix.com). If you're using AOL, you'll need the AOL 5.0 browser to use Kid Pix Email. If you need to upgrade your browser, you can download one for free at one of the following websites:
* http://www.microsoft.com
* http://www.netscape.com
* http://www.aol.com
Note:
When you first install Kid Pix Deluxe 3, a plug-in that allows you to send email via the Kid Pix Email Center is automatically installed onto your system. If at anytime thereafter you change your current browser (for example, if you go from using a Netscape browser to using an Internet Explorer browser), you will have to re-install this plug-in. This plug-in exists on the Kid Pix Deluxe 3 CD ROM. To re-install this plug-in, follow these steps:
* Close all Windows applications.
* Click on the Windows Start button.
* Point to Programs, then point to and click on Windows Explorer.
* Locate and click on Kpd3_cd.
* Locate the Install folder on the Kid Pix Deluxe 3 CD ROM, and double click on it.
* Locate the Data folder on the Kid Pix Deluxe 3 CD ROM, and double click on it.
* Locate the file named: UpldPlug.exe, and double click on it.
* The plug-in will automatically install itself on your system.
4. Sound attached to QuickTime movies may not play on NT operating systems:
If you use an NT operating system you may not be able to hear sounds associated with imported QuickTime movies. You will still be able to see the movie, but the sound will not play.
5. QuickTime movies will not export to a Shockwave Flash or Stand Alone page:
If you have a QuickTime movie attached to a page that you export as a Shockwave Flash file or Stand Alone page, the movie will not play. Instead, the first frame of the movie will be flattened to the background of your picture. This is due to an incompatibility between Shockwave Flash and QuickTime.
6. Problems with Printing:
If you encounter problems with printing, you may be able to fix the problem by installing the latest drivers for your printer. Contact the printer's manufacturer for information on how to obtain the latest drivers.
7. Adding numerous Animations, Stickers, or QuickTime movies:
Computer systems with slow processors may cause Kid Pix Deluxe 3 to run very slowly when numerous Animations, Stickers or QuickTime movies are added to a page. If this happens, simply delete several Animations, Stickers or QuickTime movies until Kid Pix Deluxe 3 resumes normal speed.
8. Importing large files:
Importing graphics, sounds and QuickTime movies with large file sizes could take a long time for Kid Pix Deluxe 3 to execute on computer systems with slow processors. If this happens, you may want to cancel the operation and choose a smaller file to import.
9. Problems with the "Say It This Way" feature:
This feature allows you to tell Kid Pix how to pronounce certain words when using the Text To Speech tool. However, once the pronunciation of a word is changed, you will have to follow these instructions to remove or cancel the changes:
* Double click on the My Computer icon on your desktop.
* Double click on the Drive C (or Hard Drive) icon.
* Open the Program Files folder.
* Open the Broderbund folder.
* Open the Kid Pix Deluxe 3 folder.
* Open the Users folder.
* Open the folder with your user name.
* Locate the file called, "words.dic."
* Drag the "words.dic" file to the Recycling Bin.
* This will remove all the pronunciation changes from the Kid Pix application.
10. Problems with the Stamp Edit Tool
When using the Stamp Edit tool, certain library folder names can become corrupted. In some cases, the names of the stamp library folders will no longer match the content found in the folders. We recommend you correct the problem by doing a full installation of Kid Pix Deluxe 3. If you donÆt have room on your hard drive for the full installation, you can correct the problem by logging on as a new user and creating a new user name, or by deleting your "My Stamps" folder.
To delete your "My Stamps" folder, please follow these instructions:
* Double click on the My Computer icon on your desktop.
* Double click on the Drive C (or Hard Drive) icon.
* Open the Program Files folder.
* Open the Broderbund folder.
* Open the Kid Pix Deluxe 3 folder.
* Open the Users folder.
* Open the folder with your user name.
* Locate the folder called, "My Stamps."
* Drag the "My Stamps" folder to the Recycling Bin.
Note: This will fix the problem associated with the corrupted library folder names, but will also remove all the edits you've made to the stamps.
11. Text boxes in exported Shockwave Flash files, Stand Alone pages, or email movies.
Text boxes in a Kid Pix picture retain a white background when exported as a Shockwave Flash file or Stand Alone page, or sent as an email movie. In order to eliminate this white background, simply choose Flatten Text from the Toolbox menu and flatten all of your text before you export your picture.
